The age is usually on the label. Tanks that are getting older are more likely to fail.
A leaking tank
A leak from the tank itself usually means replacement. A leak from a fitting or valve may be fixable.
Rusty water or rumbling
Rusty hot water or rumbling from sediment can be signs the tank is wearing out.
