How to Prevent Frozen Pipes in Nanaimo

Nanaimo winters are mild compared with most of Canada, but freezing nights still happen — and homes that rarely see a deep freeze are often less prepared.

Outside taps first

Disconnect hoses in the fall. If you have an inside shut-off for the outside tap, close it and open the outside tap to drain it.

Crawl spaces and garages

Pipes in crawl spaces, garages and outside walls freeze first. Insulate them and close crawl space vents during cold snaps.

During a cold snap

Keep the heat on, even when you are away. Open cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls. A slow drip from a tap at risk can help.

If a pipe freezes

Turn off the water to that pipe, open the tap and warm the pipe gently with a hair dryer. Never use an open flame.

If it bursts

Turn off the main water. See emergency plumbing.
